When I started college in 2012 if you had told me that I would be working for a technology company when I graduated, I would have laughed in your face.

Going into school I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life, like almost every college freshman. I knew I liked marketing, but that was about it. I found myself drawn to more and more digital marketing internships and jobs over my years at Furman University. It all started to make sense.

Senior year rolled around and the job hunt started. I knew I wanted to work in marketing using the skills that I developed over my time in school and I knew I wanted to work at a startup. I loved the idea of doing something different in a fast-paced environment every day. Here are 7 reasons why working at a startup right out of college is the best opportunity out there.

  1.      The culture is unbeatable.

When I graduated college I was nervous about moving to a new city where I knew around three people and starting a job where I didn’t know a soul. Transitioning out of living with my best friends all in a 2-minute walking distance was rough. I was worried about not having a strong group of people that knew me like the back of their hand around 24/7. Luckily, the employees at Relus are young and eager to get to know new teammates. The Relus team is dedicated to the greater community, which ties our team closer together. We are involved with many charities in the local Atlanta area, like Promise686 and The Furniture Bank. Here at Relus we see the bigger picture. We know there’s more to a company than financial success. The environment at Relus fosters companionship and collaboration. This allows employees to get to know each other on a deeper level.

 

  1.       You won’t be pigeonholed.

At Relus, you’re expected to wear a lot of hats. We’re encouraged to cross-train and wander outside the boundaries of our formal roles, pushing our personal and professional limits. At a large enterprise company, positions tend to be specialized and you’re cautioned to stay in your lane. At a startup, you’re free to explore all areas of the company and be involved across the organization.

 

  1.       Creativity is welcomed.

When looking for a job, the ability to utilize my creativity was important to me. I needed to be in a position that allowed me to be innovative and try new things. Relus lets me do just that. Because of the startup vibe, Relus allows me to be seen as a peer and not a new college graduate. Creativity is not just welcomed, it is encouraged. Every day someone is pushing me to be better and think of new ways to market our services, events, or projects. This keeps work fun and each day unique.

There are no gold watches here. You definitely get recognized for good work, but it has nothing to do with your job title or who you know. No matter who you are, if you put in the hard work, you’ll reap the rewards.

Like any startup, Relus has a ridiculous amount of perks. We have foosball and ping-pong tables downstairs, snacks every day at 3, and of course—everyone’s favorite—beer Friday. These perks allow Relus to have a comfortable environment that inspires open conversations of innovation. With perks come happier employees. With happier employees come success.

 

  1.       There is room for growth.

I started working at Relus right out of college. I didn’t have much experience at all. I knew what I had learned in the classroom (which was a lot), but I had never applied it. Once I got to the Relus office (at 22TechPark) on my first day I was thrown straight into the hustle. Within the first month, Relus invested in me and sent me to classes to receive my Google Analytics and Google AdWords Certifications. My managers instilled trust and confidence in me, and from there I saw a clear career path.

  1.       You are viewed as a person, not just an employee.

This is a big one. When I was looking for colleges something that was heavy on my mind was just being a number. I didn’t want to be known as student 124. The same thing was on my mind when I was looking for a job. I wanted to have my opinions heard and valued. I wanted to have an open flow of communication with everyone in the organization. I wanted to be looped in on issues that would affect my work. I have found all of that at Relus. I have found friends, mentors, and role models in this organization. I’m proud of the work we do, and every day I am inspired by the people around me. I don’t think I would have found this at just any workplace. That’s what makes startups, especially Relus, special.

 

If you can’t tell from my rambling above, I love my job. I love the people I work with, the opportunities (and challenges) I am presented with, and the growth I can see in front of me.
