I like to work out, and you can usually find me most mornings at the YMCA leading a fitness class, swimming, or lately attempting yoga.  But what I’m drawn to the most are those events that pair my love for exercise and being involved in community outreach.

That’s why Relus has teamed up with the Race for Rest 5K & Bed Race, benefitting the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta. With this event, not only are we involved in a fun-filled race day, but we’re also investing in and supporting the local West End Atlanta community. All the funds raised from the event support Furniture Bank programs – because everyone deserves a place to lay their head. The best part? The whole Relus team will be there!

Homelessness and domestic violence are major issues everywhere in our country, but especially close to home for us in metro Atlanta. As recently as March 2017, the Atlanta Journal Constitution cited a study listing Atlanta in the top 5 cities in the nation for the highest homeless populations.1 21% of Georgia’s homeless population are veterans.2 And, as for domestic violence in metro Atlanta, the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that in 2016, shelters across Georgia helped house 5,390 domestic violence victims and their children.3

Community outreach is important to us at Relus. After learning about this event, we immediately felt our participation and support of the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta was an extremely worthy cause. The mission of the Furniture Bank is to help provide families in transition with gently used furniture from the community to help make their house a home. For families moving out of homelessness or fleeing domestic violence, these furniture donations can make a huge difference – by having a place to eat dinner with their family or a bed to sleep in at night. And that’s not all they do! Through a partnership with United Way, Furniture Bank trains and prepares previously homeless veterans for careers in the warehouse or truck driving industry.

Here at Relus, we think that’s awesome and we can’t wait for this 5k race to benefit such a great organization. To top it all off, Monday Night Brewing is presenting the race event. They’re a local Atlanta brewery with a strong base in community outreach (they recently launched an initiative to raise $100k in 100 days for local nonprofits). Come join us on Saturday, October 28th to help support our local community – register here!
